Scientists in Italy have used two strains of lactobacilli to fight vaginal thrush. Thrush is a fungal infection caused by Candida albicans, a usually harmless fungus in the vaginal microflora. The interesting thing about this experiment is that these scientists were able to patent the two lactobacilli strains, Lactobacillus rhamnosus IMC 501® and Lactobacillus paracasei IMC 502®, also known as SYNBIO®.
